Shirley attended school in Spur, TX through 4th grade, Stamford, TX from 5th through 9th grade, and completed her high school education at Lovington High School in New Mexico, where she found her high school sweetheart, Johnny Lynn Marshall. Later, they married on March 6, 1959, in Lovington, New Mexico, and celebrated their 61st wedding anniversary earlier this year. The couple had three children; Catherine Denise Bullock, Melissa Dianne Portwood, and Michael Lynn Marshall.Shortly after they were married, Johnny and Shirley relocated to Lubbock, Texas, where Shirley worked at the Golden Horseshoe Drive Inn, USDA Cotton Classing Service, and lastly, TIME DC where she retired in 1976 due to a disability. She was a die-hard Red Raider and attended all Texas Tech home football games and Lady Raider basketball games with Johnny.Shirley was a long time resident of Lubbock and was an active member of the Redbud Lioness Club, where she helped with many fundraisers, including creating the Clothes Closet for children at Bayless Elementary. For over 30 years, she could be seen volunteering in the Lions Club booth at the South Plains Fair. She was passionate about helping others, and this was one way she felt she could give back. Shirley was a long time member of Trinity Church, where she served on the Benevolence Committee, helping grieving families in their time of need.Shirley is survived by her husband of 61 years, Johnny Lynn Marshall (Lubbock, Tx), daughter Catherine Denise Bullock and husband Wayne (Lubbock Tx), daughter Melissa Dianne Portwood and husband Richard (Lubbock, Tx), son Michael Lynn Marshall and wife April (Lubbock, Tx). Her grandchildren have many fond memories of their grandmother (always referred to as “Meme”), including weekend sleepovers, popcorn, homemade cookies, and any other sweets of their choice. They spent hours watching VHS movies, which lasted well into the midnight hours. Other joys included family dinners where Meme served her unmatched homemade “Meme mashed potatoes.” At a young age, all of the grandchildren could name their primary colors, and when asked to identify one, in particular, it was always referred to as “Meme Red,” which was Shirley’s favorite color and worn in most of her outfits.Surviving siblings include one sister, Bennie Kay Cowan and husband Dallas of Spokane, Washington.Shirley was preceded in death by her parents Ben Perry (1982), her mother, Ruby Perry (1974), a great-grandson Travis Wayne (2001), and a great-granddaughter Lucy Ryan (2013).Pallbearers will be Andrew Marshall, Mason Marshall, Jason Bullock, Ally Caldwell, Frank McInroe, and Ed Fahsholtz.
