Daisy was born to David Abney and Elizabeth Hensel Abney on March 1st, 1940, in Abernathy, Texas. She grew up alongside her four siblings, Horace (Fritz), Esther, Laverne, and Shirley, and shared many memorable childhood adventures with them. Her family moved around throughout her childhood and eventually relocated to Ashdown, Arkansas, where Daisy graduated from Ashdown High School. After high school, her family finally settled in Anton, Texas, where she met her husband DeWayne Sudduth. DeWayne and Daisy dated for six months and married on September 9, 1959, at First Baptist Church in Anton, Texas.
After getting married, DeWayne and Daisy moved throughout the Southwest with the United States Air Force, finally settling down in Lubbock, Texas. Along the way, Daisy became a dedicated mother to three boys, Dana, David, and Darren. She is remembered as a loving wife, devoted mother, “Grammy” to seven grandchildren, and great-grandmother to five. She showered her grandchildren as well as her great-grandchildren with unconditional love, warmth, and wisdom. Daisy embraced every moment spent with her loved ones and created cherished memories that will be passed down through generations.
Professionally, Daisy enjoyed a successful career with Lubbock Federal Credit Union (LFCU), working her way from an entry-level position to President of the Credit Union. During her time as President of LFCU, she was able to significantly increase the Credit Union’s profits and opened additional branches throughout Lubbock. Before Daisy’s retirement, she merged LFCU with Alliance Federal Credit Union, strengthening both businesses in the process. During her career, Daisy was an active participant in the Chamber of Commerce, and American Business Women’s Association (ABWA), and also served on the Board of the Better Business Bureau. Through the ABWA, she was awarded “Woman of the Year” and was selected “Business Associate of the Year.” She believed in the power of personal connections and forged deep relationships with employees, colleagues, and members alike. When quoted in a book featuring the “Professional Lubbock Woman,” Daisy said her success was “measured by the worth of her children and what she has been able to accomplish in the lives of others.”
Daisy has worked with the Children’s Miracle Network, March of Dimes, and the Lubbock Chapter of Diabetes Society to raise funds through LFCU throughout her life. She was also a woman of deep faith, finding solace and strength in her relationship with God. She was a devout member of Victory Life Baptist Church, where she found community, support, and spiritual nourishment. Her unwavering faith was an inspiration to all who knew her.
Daisy is survived by her husband of 63 years, DeWayne, her three sons, Dana (Debbie), David (Julie), and Darren, her five grandchildren Zachary, Shannon (Fred), Cole, Matthew (Nicole), Reagan, Rachel (Jacob), and Carsyn, and great-grandchildren, Kennedy, Henleigh, Brixton, Maevly, and Theodore.
As we say goodbye to our beloved Grammy, we take solace in the beautiful memories she left behind. Her love and legacy will continue to guide and inspire us in our lives. Daisy will forever hold a special place in our hearts. One of Daisy’s favorite quotes was, If there ever comes a day where we can’t be together, keep me in your heart. I’ll stay there forever.”
