Devoted Husband, Father, Grandfather, and Public Servant: Russell “Rusty” William Brooks
Lubbock, TX – Rusty passed away peacefully on May 3rd, 2024, at the age of 83. He was a beloved husband to Mary Brooks for 46 years, a devoted father to Kevin, William (Natalie), Tracy (Gene Kelley), Kandy (Charlie Hilliard), and Todd (Bonnie). A cherished grandfather to Bridgette, Madeline, Charlotte, Carlin, Zak, Jamie, Brittany, Shannon, Tony, and Ashley.
He is also survived by his siblings, Art (Lian), Phil (Deb Ely), and Bev (Jack Callahan). He was preceded in death by his parents, Robert Brooks and Theodosia Varner, and his older brother Bob (Karen).
Rusty proudly served his country in the Navy for 21 years, where he was a cryptographer stationed throughout the world. After his military service, Rusty continued his commitment to public safety by embarking on a 22-year career in law enforcement with the Lubbock County Sherrif’s Department. Throughout his time on the force, he was known for his dedication, bravery, compassion, and work ethic.
Rusty loved spending time with his family; whether it was vacationing to different countries, watching his boys, Kevin and William, play soccer, or attending any University of Texas sporting events. You would always see him with a smile, and he was always the first to offer help, no matter the person or circumstances.
Rusty will be deeply missed by his loving family, extended relatives, and many friends. He leaves behind a legacy of honor, service, and unwavering dedication to those he cared for.
