Ruben was the type of man that would push you to your limits in the best way possible. I had the privilege of working with him for 13 years. The best part of Ruben was seeing his face light up when he would talk about his grandkids and show us pictures of them, or when he would laugh when telling us a story. His laugh was the most contagious laugh. He always wanted the best out of everyone and I can honestly say I owe a lot of my work ethic to him. I will truly miss Ruben. I think a lot of us as young men had much of the same stories. I started at 15 and man was he tough. Everyone would always ask, who’s closing tonight, when they said Ruben, you knew you were gonna work your tail off and you weren’t leaving till it was done. He created in me a work ethic that I still carry today and is rolling right into my kiddos. I had loads of respect for the kind of man and teacher he was to me, and till this day, to young men and women at United. That place ran the way it did for so long because you were a huge part of it. I worked with Ruben for almost 26 years. He would get me to help him do things when the store was slow. At times I would get tired of him picking me, but he did because he believed I would do a good job. I didn't appreciate that compliment for a while. All he wanted was the best out of his employees, and I sometimes didn't do that. If you took the time to get to know him, he really cared about his employees, and guests, and most importantly his family. Our store will never be the same. Prayers for his friends, family and all his co-workers, both present and past!

It is a bittersweet moment, letting Ruben go, so that his pain would end, but selfish of my part in letting him go. I remember him as a little kid, working so hard at The Bounty bussing tables! He has always had a strong work ethic even at such a young age.
I will treasure a set of dishes he gave Baltazar and I as a wedding present in 1977. There were times when we did not agree on some things, so the rule was at our Family Game Nights, not to talk about Politics. If we did, one of us had to go home.
He was there for my girls, although somehow he would manage to make one of them cry. That would always cost him a few dollar bills just to stop their crying. One day, he was playing outside with the girls and tried to take the ball away, he kicked the ball and the ball landed on Angie’s face, she started crying, he immediately pulled out a $5 bill and gave it to her. Then Myndi goes and gets the ball, brings it to him and said, “Ruben, you can hit me too”!
I will miss my brother-in-law more than he will ever know. His memory will live forever in my heart!
I am thankful we had these years with him, gone too soon!

My heart is crushed for the Padilla family. Ruben was my work dad for 14 years. He was ornery in the most beautiful and needed way for a lot of us at United, and he pushed me to be better and excel no matter what. He talked me off a cliff more times than I’d like to admit, and he always made sure that I landed on both feet. His laughter, though few got to witness it, was contagious, and he loved his wife and children with a fierceness that most of us never experience. I’m sad and angry that he had to go, but I am so incredibly grateful that he walked this earth.
