It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Ruben Garza Mendez, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend, who left us on April 1, 2025, at the age of 68. Born on June 18, 1956, in Crosbyton, Texas, Ruben called Lubbock his home for many years.
Ruben was a dedicated truck driver for most of his life, and he also drove the Citi Bus on the Texas Tech campus, connecting with many students along his routes. Last month, he made a profound commitment by giving his heart to Jesus Christ, a step that brought him great peace.
A family man at heart, Ruben cherished the time spent with his wife of 50 years, Juanita, their daughter Veronica “Chona” Mendez Torres and husband Max Martinez, and son Jonah Mendez. He was a proud grandfather to Jacob Bobby Torres and wife Maria Salazar, Apryl Michelle Torres and Joshua Orosco, Fabian Isaac Torres and wife Le’Ann Navarrette, Mariah and Matthew Guajardo, and Jacob Bobby “Jr.” Torres Jr.; a great-grandfather to Luciana Rose Torres, Layla Rae Torres, Ezekiel Trae Torres, Ariel Violet Torres, and Richard Kyng Guajardo; as well as a brother to Martin Mendez and wife Annabell, Alfonso Mendez and wife Toni, Frank Mendez and wife Lupe, Lionosid Mendez and wife Rosa, Phillip Mendez and wife Rosie, Manuel Mendez and wife Lidia, Ernest Mendez and wife Lanetta, Isabel Mendez, and Juanita Mendez. Ruben loved nothing more than spending time with his children and grandchildren, playing the accordion in the driveway, his passion for photography, and collecting guns and rifles. He also took time to feed the birds every day and Ruben had a knack for looking out for his neighbors, always ready to lend a helping hand, and sharing his sense of humor with everyone around him.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Alfonso and Eloisa Mendez; a sister, Anita Mendez; a brother, Jimmy Mendez; and a grandchild, Delicia Mendez.
Rest in peace, Ruben. You’ve left a legacy of love and laughter that will forever resonate in our hearts.
