Roy grew up in the East End of Houston during the 30’s and 40’s, where he got to experience a diversity of cultures. Roy was a hard worker from a very young age, delivering newspapers by bike in the early morning hours. While going to Stephen F. Austin High School he worked as a delivery boy for a deli and bakery.
He put himself through college working for the Ford Motor Co. while attending Southwestern Bible Institute in Waxahachie. At Southwestern he met a young lady named Frances Walker from Littlefield. They married in 1953. He went on to receive his Bachelor of Science from Southwestern.
After college went to work at the Goodyear plant where most of the men in his family worked. He was expecting his third child, when he was laid off. Which brought them to West Texas to be closer to Frances’s family, as he got a job traveling for Monkey Grip.
He met Ross McWhorter, who was very impressed with him. In 1964, he partnered with McWhorter’s Goodyear Tire Store in Levelland, Texas and McWhorter-Reid Tire was formed. In 1971, Roy became sole owner of Roy Reid Tire Store. He had a sign that he displayed his personal business policy for everyone to see “It must be right or we will make it right”. He retired after 43 years of service to Levelland and the surrounding communities.
Through the years, Roy served the community of Levelland as an active member and leader of the Levelland Chamber of Commerce, Levelland Economic Development Corporation, City Council, and Lions Club. He received the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Chamber of Commerce.
Roy leaves a legacy of faith in Jesus Christ as his Lord & Savior. He and Frances were members of Trinity Church where Roy served for many years as a deacon, at one time he was chosen to be Deacon of the Year. He was part of the Hospital Visitation team and Director of Prayer Ministries for several years and part of the Worship and Leadership Team for Senior Adult Ministry. He and Frances were also active in the “Primetimers” at Trinity.
