Ron Howell was born November 27, 1947, to Harvey and Evelyn Bonham Howell in Lubbock, Texas. He graduated from Monterey High School in 1966. He then attended Texas Tech University and graduated with a Bachelor of Business Administration in Accounting. While at Tech, Ron met Susan Whitis in Government class and they married on June 7, 1969, in Houston Texas. After their wedding, he was drafted into the military and began his service in the United States Air Force, completing basic training at Lackland AFB, San Antonio. Ron was stationed at Clark Air Force Base, Manila, Philippines for fifteen months until 1972 when he was honorably discharged. Ron and Susan were blessed with two sons, Brad in 1975, and Jeff in 1980.
Ron obtained his Certified Public Accounting License in 1982. Ron, Susan, and family then moved to Lubbock from Hobbs in 1987 and became members of St. Luke’s Methodist Church and The Crusaders Sunday School Class.
In December of 2005, Ron suffered an incapacitating brain injury and spent the next 18 years under the care of The Centre for Neuro Skills in Irving, Texas and Texas State Veteran’s Home in Big Spring, Texas.
Ron was a faithful Red Raider following every sport through every season. He was an avid baseball fan and could be found every spring at Dan Law Field with a bag of peanuts. He loved Lubbock with all his heart and was proud to tell everyone where he was from. He was a dedicated member of Beta Theta Pi fraternity, serving as chapter advisor while his sons were in college and opening his home to many young men that came through the fraternity.
Ron is survived by wife, Susan Howell; children, Bradley Dee (Melissa) Howell, Jeffrey Todd (Cassidi) Howell; and grandchildren, Madilyn Ann Howell, Hayden Ronald Howell, Brooklyn Susan Howell; siblings, Dewayne Howell, Carrie Jo Scott, Les (Paige) Howell, Tracy (Ron) St Pierre.
He is preceded in death by parents, Harvey Howell and Evelyn Jenkins; and stillborn son, Keith Whitis Howell.
He left this world on Tuesday, March 5, 2024.
