Roger John Berset went home to be with our Lord, Jesus Christ on Sunday, October 27, 2024 at the age of 83.
Roger was born on August 23, 1941 in McAllen, Texas. His family moved to Lubbock when he was a freshman in high school and that is where he met the love of his life, Sandra Pantel. They graduated from Monterey High School in 1960. Roger then went to serve in the Marine Corps and was active in the reserves for six years. He married Sandra Pantel on February 1, 1963 in Lubbock, Texas and they had a wonderful marriage for 61 years together. They went on to have two beautiful daughters, Angie and Laurie, who brought them joy every day. He cherished spending time with his family, particularly his adored grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Roger started his career in the Optical business in the early 1960’s and was a respected and successful businessman for over 60 years in the Lubbock community. His legacy in the optical business consisted of Pro-Optics, King’s Optical, and Optical Design. Renowned for his expertise, he gained the title of the best Optician in Lubbock. He earned the trust and admiration of countless customers and friends over the years. Roger retired in December 2023 leaving behind a lasting impact on the community he served.
In addition to his professional accomplishments, Roger found immense joy in his hobbies and interests, which consisted of classic cars and gun and knife collecting. His passion for cars started when he was young, but particularly in the 1980’s was building dune buggies and taking endless trips to the sand dunes. His love for restoring classic cars allowed him to be a member of the Caprock Classic Car Club and the Nifty Fifty’s Car Club for several years. His favorite car he restored was a 1950 Cadillac, better known as the
“Papa Mobile”. Many hours of fun were had by all cruising in it. He had an enormous collection of knives, big and small, which grew in every attendance to Gun and Knife shows he enjoyed with his grandsons.
In memory of Roger’s unwavering love, commitment, and joyful spirit, his legacy will forever remain in the hearts of those who knew and loved him the most. His family members who remain here to cherish his memory are his wife Sandy; daughters Angie Freeman, husband Scot; Laurie Canale, husband Shawn; grandchildren Aaron Freeman, wife Alexandra; Jessica Haines, husband Justin; Ryan Canale, and Ethan Canale; great-grandchildren Gavin Perez, Emilia Haines, and soon to arrive baby boy Haines; siblings Ann Beachum, Kathy Crane, Dana Berset, and Mark Berset; along with numerous nieces and nephews and extended family.
Roger was preceded in death by his parents Roger and Kathryn Berset; and siblings Karen Samford, Mary Lynn Griffith, and Matthew Berset.
Roger was a beloved husband, devoted father, loving Papa to his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He was a caring brother, uncle, and friend. He will be missed by all.
