Norma Jean Morris was born on March 14, 1935, to Jack and Viola Scofield in Dalhart, Texas. In 1952, she married Barney Schmidt, and they had three children: David, Mart and Lynn. They lived in Dumas until 1971.
On March 25, 1973, Norma married Eugene (Gene) Morris in Wentzville, Missouri, and their family grew to include Gene’s daughters, Carol and Kathy, whom she loved as her own. Norma and Gene fostered a home filled with unconditional love, where each child felt cherished and valued equally. In 1982, Norma and Gene moved to Pell City, Alabama, bringing their vibrant energy and warmth to the community.
Norma’s love for her community was evident in her many contributions. She was a devoted member of the Pell City Public Library and served on the PELL City Library Guild Boards, spreading her passion for reading and learning. Her involvement in the local committee for the Dolly Parton Imagination Library showcased her dedication to fostering childhood literacy and a love for books in the hearts of young readers.
Her strong faith guided her as an active member of the Pell City First United Methodist Church. Norma’s caring nature also SHINE through her work with the St. Clair Chapter of the American Cancer Society and the Pell City Relay for Life, where she tirelessly supported cancer research and awareness initiatives.
Norma’s leadership and joyful spirit were exemplified in her roles on the Pell City Senior Citizens Board and as a past president of The Greater Pell City Chamber of Commerce. Her efforts earned her the honor of being named Pell City Citizen of the Year, a testament to her profound impact on the community.
Beyond her public service, Norma’s entrepreneurial spirit flourished. She co-owned two beloved businesses: Small World, a charming clothing store for children, and Current Hang-ups, a delightful women’s clothing store. Her cheerful personality and dedication to quality service made these stores cherished destinations in the community.
Norma Jean Morris passed away on June 15, 2024, in Lubbock, Texas. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Eugene (Gene) Morris, who died on September 5, 2020. They were married for 47 wonderful years. She was also preceded in death by her parents, Jack and Viola Scofield, and daughter, Mart Rutter.
Norma is survived by her brother, Carl Scofield; her children, David Schmidt and his wife, Barbara; Lynn Schmidt and his wife, Karla; Carol Tuck and her husband, Larry; Kathy Brown and her husband, Larry Johnson; and son-in-law, Jim Rutter. She is also survived by numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren, whom she adored deeply. Norma’s greatest joy was her family, and her love for each of them was boundless and equal.
Norma’s life was a celebration of joy, caring, and unwavering dedication to others. Her legacy will continue to inspire and uplift those who knew her and the many lives she touched.

The service for Norma Jean Morris will be held on Monday, June 24, 2024, at 11 a.m. at Lake Ridge Chapel and Memorial Designers. This ceremony will be a beautiful opportunity to honor her memory and celebrate the life she cherished. Following the heartfelt tribute, she will be laid to rest at Resthaven Memorial Park.
