Nicholas James Christensen was born March 3, 1948, to Steven Christensen and Thelma White in Quanah, Texas. He married Juanema Fancher on June 3, 1988, in Lubbock, Texas.
Nick spent most of his growing years living on a farm in Kirkland, Texas with his grandparents, Gola (Nina) and Theodore; (Tot) Bierwirth. He remembered his time with his grandparents fondly, and over the years he often recounted stories of the love and time they gave to him, especially about Nina’s homemade biscuits.
Nick loved sports and played basketball in high school for the Childress Bobcats. Classmates described him as “a sociable guy that always had a great smile and was liked by all that met him.” After graduating high school in 1966, Nick attended Mississippi State University and was a member of the ROTC. He married, moved back to Childress, and had his first daughter, Lesa. Nick worked in newspaper sales at The Childress Index as well as the KCTX radio station. Nick then moved to Lubbock in 1976 to pursue a career in sales. He has owned several different companies, most recently Christensen Construction.
He was an active tennis player in his youth, which continued to fuel his competitive drive. He never missed a day at the gym and considered folks there to be family. He was an avid dog lover, adopting over 15 dogs throughout his life. He loved maintaining and enjoying his yard. He loved Texas Tech and was a Lady Raiders season ticket holder for ten years. He never missed the chance to chat with his friends at Caprock about the latest Texas Tech game.
Nick and Juanema married in 1988 at their current home. Nick and Juanema had two beautiful daughters, Lauren and Haley. Along with Lesa, the family had lots of laughs and adventures. Nick valued family above all else. Growing up, he went above and beyond to attend every choir concert, basketball game, and handbell performance for his daughters. His family has fond memories of “donuts with dad” every Friday, and many trips to San Antonio to visit the Alamo. He was a beloved father who was extremely supportive of his daughter’s and grandchildren’s accomplishments. Nick loved his grandkids and followed them through life with frequent visits and an active presence. Most recently, he traveled to attend Ryan’s college ring ceremony and was proud to see Peyton walk the stage at United Spirit Arena this past May. In the past year and a half, he made frequent visits to Houston to visit his newest grandchild, Graham. You couldn’t go out in public without Nick talking about his family. The addition of Nick’s son-in-laws, Lance, Mason, and Trent, to the family was such a thrill to Nick. He bragged to everyone he met that all his girls had made fantastic choices in their husbands. He loved having the male bonding time, with stories of his past always being a highlight.
Nick was an avid movie-goer with popcorn and a Diet Dr.Pepper in hand. Any time the tv was on, he had a story about the movie that was on. He loved John Wayne as well as scary movies, and he never missed a Christmas season without watching It’s a Wonderful Life. Nick also loved to travel. He had many opportunities over the years, but a beach vacation would always be his top choice. A chair in the sun with a good book and a steak on the grill for dinner would have been his perfect lazy day.
He was a loving husband who supported and provided for his family. He believed his girls should have the best life possible, and he sacrificed to give them new experiences. He worked hard to give our family wonderful vacations and the ability to send his girls to Texas A&M University. His ability to never meet a stranger will be missed dearly.
