Doctor Mohammad Fawwaz Shoukfeh, 82, of Lubbock, Texas, passed away peacefully on January 22, 2025, surrounded by his loving family.
Born in Hama, Syria on November 27, 1942, Dr. Shoukfeh graduated from Damascus University Medical School in 1970. He completed his internal medicine residency at Cook County Hospital in Chicago, Illinois, followed by a residency in 1973 at Huron Road Hospital in Cleveland, Ohio. Following his residency, he completed his fellowship in Interventional Cardiology at Cleveland Clinic in 1976 where he trained under pioneer cardiologist Dr. F. Mason Sones. Dr. Shoukfeh was a Fellow of the American College of Cardiology (FACC).
Dr. Shoukfeh and his family moved to Lubbock, where he embarked on a distinguished career in interventional cardiology, deeply committed to the patients he served. He worked with Cardiology Associates before opening his private practice, Texas Cardiac Center, in 1999. He was one of the founders of the Lubbock Heart Hospital. He also ran the most active cardiovascular research program in Lubbock. After 44 years of dedicated service to the Lubbock community, Dr. Shoukfeh retired in October 2020.
Dr. Shoukfeh is survived by his wife, Raida J. Shoukfeh; his daughters, Dr. Mayada Khater and her husband, Dr. Tim Khater; Dr. Lama Shoukfeh and her husband, Kirk Franklin; Dr. Lena Kharrat and her husband, Dr. Houssam Kharrat; and his son, Dr. Omar Shoukfeh and his wife, Dr. Suzanne Shoukfeh. He is also survived by his beloved grandchildren: Dalia Khater (Tariq Itani), Keenan Khater, Fawwaz M. Shoukfeh, Kareem Khater, Noura Shoukfeh, Bilal Kharrat, Razanne Shoukfeh, Zaid H. Kharrat, Yusuf Shoukfeh, Omar Kharrat, and Raida Shoukfeh, as well as many cherished friends and colleagues.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to the 501(c)3 nonprofit SAMS (Syrian American Medical Association) towards the Cardiac Cath Lab & Cardiology Program, in honor of Dr. Shoukfeh’s lifelong commitment to his care for those with heart disease.
Dr. Shoukfeh’s memory will live on in the hearts of all who loved him, and his legacy of care, service and charity will continue to inspire us forever.
