“Melba was born on September 21, 1933, to Melba and Lela Mae (Boyd) Thompson, Sr. in Lubbock and graduated from Lubbock Cooper High School. Melba married Betty Clark on Sept. 28, 1951, in Lubbock. Melba was a lifelong farmer in the Lubbock area. He was a member of Woodrow Baptist Church. Melba served on the Lubbock Cooper school board and was an honorary member of the Cooper FFA. He also served as committee chair for Lubbock County FSA and a recipient of the Outstanding Conservation Farmer award.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife; and five siblings, Wade Thompson, Pauline Garnett, Martha Robertson, Buddy Thompson, and Wanda Cook.
Melba is survived by his three children, Larry Thompson of Lubbock, Steve (Lycretia) Thompson of Lubbock, and Janet (Brady) Mimms of Lorenzo, six grandchildren, NaShai (Robert III) Carson of Las Cruces, NM, Coby (Megan) Thompson of Ropesville, Rhett (Mandy) Mimms of Acuff, Ryan (Ashleigh) Mimms of Acuff, Kami Thompson of Lubbock, and Ty (Danna) Thompson of Arch, NM; 12 great grandchildren; and numerous nieces.
