Mary Helen “Maria Elena” went home to be with the Lord on Wednesday, April 3, 2024, surrounded by family. A service to celebrate Helen’s 89 years of life is scheduled at 1:00 PM on Saturday, April 20, 2024, at Lake Ridge Chapel and Memorial Designers.
Helen was born July 25, 1934, to Alfredo and Felicita [Gonzales] Velarde in Sante Fe, NM, where she grew up with an extensive family. She married the love of her life, Charles “Tunnie” Lane Sharpe, on June 20, 1953, in Santa Fe, New Mexico where they resided and grew their family. Helen and Tunnie welcomed the second love of their lives, Charles “Carlos” Anthony Sharpe in 1958.
Helen had a love and a skill in sewing, and painting and especially had a green thumb when it came to her flowers. Helen and Tunnie spent many years growing what they became known for in Santa Fe and beyond, their Garden of Love. Helen will be remembered for her love of family, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nephews, and nieces, her gardening, her love of Wheel of Fortune, and her love of pictures.
Helen lived out the remainder of her life surrounded by her loving family in Lubbock, Texas where she will be laid to rest.
She is preceded in death by her husband, Charles “Tunnie” Sharpe; parents, Alfredo and Felicita Velarde.
Helen is survived by a son, Carlos (Anita) Sharpe; grandchildren, Nichole (Dan) Stanton, Felicia (Jonathon) Read, Crystal (Justyne) Bowles; great-grandchildren, Elliott Stanton, Kinleigh Stanton, Hadley Read, Jaidyn Read; bonus grandchild, JP Naranjo; along with brothers, sisters, and many nephews and nieces.
