Mary Catherine (Hitt) Sewell was born on March 7, 1933, to Walter and Loreen Hitt. She was one of 23 children (including half siblings). Marrying Howard W. Sewell in 1951, the couple built their forever home south of Wolfforth, TX on the original Hitt homestead. They had six children: Jeff, Kelly (Teresa), Cindy, Valerie, Maureen, and Woody (Tammy); 10 grandchildren: Robert Sewell, Christopher (Kyla) and Michael (Ashley) Lollis, Evan, Ian, Oran and Upton Sewell, Caitlen and Caleigh Marshall-Sewell, and Bryce (Summer) Hamrick and five great grandchildren: Silas, Braxton, Jake, Remi, and Dawson.
Mary grew up in the country surrounded by family members, many of which were her childhood friends. Her sister, Martha Phillips, is the only living sibling. She loved them all and feverishly studied and taught them the Hitt Family history. Mary loved the Great Plains, reading, cards games, Scrabble, crossword puzzles, planting wildflowers, gardening and traveling with family and friends. She loved volunteering with her children’s activities including coaching, scorekeeping, PTAs, 4-H Club Leader, and more. She was active in numerous clubs around the Wolfforth community as well.
Mary retired from Texas Tech Health Science Center after 21 years of service and was an avid fan of Texas Tech Athletics. She volunteered over 30 years as the Manager of the Wolfforth Cemetery, and successfully led the endeavor of the cemetery’s historical marker awarded in 2023. Mary served in the Texas Medical Association and the Lubbock Lake Landmark, a division of the Texas Tech Museum. She was a member of the Wolfforth Methodist Church from birth.
Mary took her last breath on April 30, 2024, in Country View Living in Dimmitt, Texas where she received excellent care for which the family is grateful. She was preceded in death by her husband, Howard Woodman Sewell and two children, Jeff Sewell, and Cindy Johnson.
