It is with great sadness that the Zias family announce that our beloved wife and mother, Mary Zias, fell asleep in the Lord, surrounded by her family at 60 years of age on September 28^th, 2023. Mary was born on October 14th, 1962 in Staten Island, New York as the fifth of six children to Joan and Frank DeCelie. Mary received her RN at the College of Staten Island in 1984. As a new nurse graduate, she met her endearing husband, Dr. John Zias, who was working as a medical resident. They married on July 23^rd, 1989 in New York. A loving and fulfilling marriage of 34 years followed. Mary completed her Bachelor of Science in Nursing at Texas Tech University, graduating Magna Cum Laude in 1990. In the early years of her career, she worked as an Emergency Room Nurse at the Methodist Hospital in Lubbock, Texas. Mary left her position in the ER in 1991 to take on her most important task in life: being a perfect mother. Mary devoted all of her time, love, and energy to succeed in that most prized role.

Mary was a deft competitive athlete. She excelled in high school basketball and later in life became a competitive tennis player, graceful double black diamond skier, and single digit handicap golfer. She took such pride in beating the guys in tennis, golf, and bocce ball. Mary loved exercising and training. She completed multiple marathons, as well as a Half Ironman Qualifier. In her final years, she remained tough in her fight with cancer, which eventually took her life early.

Mary is survived by her husband, Dr. John Zias; her children, Christopher Zias, Nicholas and wife Katherine Zias, and Stephanie Zias; granddaughter Elizabeth Stephanie Zias; siblings Frank DeCelie, Edward DeCelie, Joan DeCelie-Germana, Patrick DeCelie, and Kathleen Homa; as well as many nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. She is preceded in death by her parents Joan and Frank DeCelie.

Family and friends are invited for visitation and Trisagion prayers at Lakeridge Chapel and Memorial Designers from 6-8 PM on Wednesday October 4^th, 2023 in Lubbock, Texas. A Greek Orthodox funeral service will be held at St. Elizabeth’s Catholic Church in Lubbock at 10 AM on Thursday October 5^th, 2023. A Celebration of Life lunch will follow at the Lubbock Country Club at 12 PM. The internment and burial will take place at the Sparkman-Hillcrest Memorial Park Cemetery in Dallas, Texas on Saturday October 7^th, 2023 at 1 PM.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the St. Andrews Greek Orthodox Church in Lubbock, Texas.

We have such fond memories of Mary from our many years together at the St. B-skiing, dining, talking, laughing, singing, dancing. What a force of fun and love she was! She was the center that joined all of the diverse St. B families together and helped us grow tender friendships. We Gaudins loved seeing her in Lubbock and Austin, too. She delighted in each of you so, so much. Her family was everything to her, as you know. Her last text exchange with me in January was full of delight in your accomplishments. Your lives are the greatest testaments to her own loving work as a mother and a wife.

I’m so sorry for your family’s loss, it’s hard to comprehend! I went to Mt Carmel with Mary. My family knew all the DeCelie’s. I have fond memories of my classmates from way back when including Mary. She was a jokester. After we graduated some of still got together just being goofy. I remember Mary teasing me that I had crow’s feet around my eyes (I was what 14! Geez to think then I had wrinkles🙃). I’ve watched her grow afar through Facebook and have always been impressed with her accomplishments and more importantly her family! I know it’s hard as I just lost my mom four months ago, but she left quite a legacy! There’s nothing that can replace a mom, a friend, a sister or brother. She will always be there in your hearts. God bless all of you through these trying times! Keep and trust in your faith!
