Mary Edna Pruett Woodard, 94, of Lubbock, formerly of Seminole, died Tuesday, February 18, 2025 at The Gardens at Shadow Hills in Lubbock.
Mary was born in Humble City, New Mexico to Hubert and Sylvia Pruett in 1930, the youngest of three. The family eventually settled in Seminole when Mary was 7 years old. She played in the marching band and graduated from Seminole High School in 1947.
Mary and Raymond “Woody” Woodard were charter members and the first couple to be married in South Seminole Baptist Church in 1949. The early years of their marriage were spent following Raymond’s career with Texaco, living in several states across the country, and adding three children along the way. In every place they lived, Mary ensured they joined the local Baptist church, and she started a Sunday school class for the children if they were without. After years away, Mary and her family returned home to Seminole to take over the Texaco station from Mary’s father.
Mary was a homemaker and active member of South Seminole Baptist Church. Over her years in the community, she maintained the library of the church, taught Sunday school and women’s bible studies, was a member of Women’s Missionary Union, and helped start Meals on Wheels in Seminole. The home where Mary lived across the street from the church, is now the Woodard House and is used to continue her and Raymond’s legacy of service. As was her lifelong pattern, after moving to Lubbock in 2013, she attended Broadview Baptist Church.
She is preceded in death by her parents Hubert and Sylvia Maude Pruett; her husband, Raymond “Woody” Woodard; her brothers George, and wife, Ella Pruett, Wilford, and wife, Billie Jean Pruett; and a granddaughter.
Those left to cherish her memory are her children, Ray and wife, Patsy Woodard of Vancouver, British Columbia; Mike and wife, Susan Woodard of Abilene, and Patricia and husband, Stacy Gill of New Home; eight grandchildren; and 23 great-grandchildren.
If you would like to honor her life of service, the family suggests donations to Meals on Wheels.
