Mark Preston Harlan

We gather to honor and remember the remarkable life of Mark Preston Harlan, who suddenly left us on May 24, 2024. Mark’s journey began on August 4, 1954, in Lubbock, Texas, born to Oliver Preston and Alyce Marye Howell Harlan. A proud graduate of Monterey High School in 1972, Mark continued to deepen his roots in his hometown by attending Texas Tech University, where he served as President of the Freshman Class. He earned a bachelor’s degree in Mass Communications in 1976.

Mark’s life was rich with love, learning, and laughter. On March 7, 1981, he married the love of his life, Peggy Diane Wilkins, at the First Christian Church in Lubbock. Together, they built a life filled with joy, supported by a foundation of mutual respect and deep affection.

Mark’s career touched the broadcasting industry in Lubbock with successful positions at radio stations KLBK-AM/FM, KFYO/Z102, and eventual ownership in KMMX-FM/KONE-FM. Those stations sold in 1997 to the radio group that owned KLLL-FM.

Known for his sharp intellect and an unwavering sense of duty, Mark was a historian of his family history, possessing an incredible knack for recalling intricate details and anecdotes that enriched the tapestry of his family’s legacy. His character was marked by his judicial demeanor and conservative values, reflecting his role as a staunch conservative who held his beliefs with great conviction.

Mark’s infectious enthusiasm for life was evident in his love for old movies and his ability to laugh wholeheartedly at the antics of the Three Stooges, which always brought a spark of childlike joy to his eyes. This same upbeat spirit made him a protective, organized, and cherished presence within his family.

He leaves behind his devoted wife, Diane, and his son, Matthew Preston Harlan, along with Matthew’s fiancée, Ashley Austin. His sister, Sally Robinson, her husband Dennis, and his brother, Harry Harlan, and his mother-in-law, Wanda Wilkins survive him. Mark’s legacy will continue to live on through his nieces and nephews—Jesse and Jason Robinson; Natalie Wilkins, Candice Wilkins Ransbarger, her husband Russell, and their children Ford and John. He is also survived by his sister-in-law and her husband, Brenda and Dr. John Pender.

Mark’s family invites friends and loved ones to join in a visitation for reflection and support, which will be held from 5 p.m. until 7 p.m. on Tuesday, May 28, 2024, at Lake Ridge Chapel and Memorial Designers. His life will be celebrated in a service at the same location on Thursday, May 30, 2024, at 11 a.m.

In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that memorial contributions be made to Lubbock Meals on Wheels, an organization dear to Mark’s heart. Contributions will continue his legacy of caring and community support.

Mark Preston Harlan’s story is one of love, commitment, and enduring strength. As we remember him, let us carry forward his legacy in our own lives, embodying the principles he lived by and cherishing the memories he leaves behind.
