Maria Rita Picon departed this life on Saturday, March 24, 2018. Family and friends will gather for a Rosary Service on Tuesday, March 27, 2018 at 6:30 PM at Lake Ridge Chapel and Memorial Designers at 6025 82nd St. A mass to celebrate her life of 74 years will be held on Wednesday, March 28, 2018 at 10 AM at Our Lady of Grace Catholic Church at 3111 Erskine.
Maria Rita was born on November 9, 1943 to Donaciano and Maria (Mendez) Salas in Slaton. As a young girl, she lived on a farm and attended school in Woodrow before moving to Lubbock. On November 5, 1959, Maria married the love of her life, Frank Picon in Lubbock. They would go on to raise five children. She was a member of Our Lady of Grace Catholic Church. Maria worked as a professional seamstress for almost 40 years starting at Lena Stephens before moving on to Skibell’s and eventually retiring from Dunlaps. In her spare time, Maria enjoyed sewing, reading, crafting and just spending time with her family.
She was preceded in death by her son, Esteban Salaz Picon; parents, Donaciano and Maria Salas; two sisters, Esperanza Lara, and Prudencia Rivas; and a brother, Juan M. Salas.
Survivors include her husband, Frank Picon Sr. of Lubbock; four children, Sylvia Garza and husband, Sonny; Frank Picon Jr. and wife, Patricia; Rick Picon and wife, Lisa; and Michelle Robles and husband, Felix all of Lubbock; seven grandchildren, Erik M. Garza and wife, Cindy of Lubbock; Brandon Picon of Lubbock, Erin Garza of Irving, Donovan Troy Picon, Dominic Trevor Picon, Zachary Stephen Picon and Mia E. Robles all of Lubbock; great-grandson, Liam Xander McCray of San Antonio; four siblings, Gregorio Salas, Frances Martinez, Elias Salas and wife, Elida; Consuelo Gomez and husband, Emilio; Juan R. Salas and wife, Arcelia all of Lubbock.
