“Jean was born on January 27, 1933 to Edward and Gladys (Dekle) Russell in Ropesville and graduated from Ropes High School. On October 18, 1951 she married Loy Hamby in Portales, NM. Jean retired from Texas Instruments then worked as a Retail Merchandiser. She was an Eastern Star and an active Ropesville Senior Citizen. She was a member of the Ropesville quilting club, the Renegade Red Hats, and the First Baptist Church. Jean volunteered for many fund raising events over the years. She raised money for different needed facilities and projects in Ropesville and was honored to receive the Hockley County Senior Volunteer of the year award several years. Jean was also proud of being a two time cancer survivor. Anyone that knew Jean knew how much she enjoyed crocheting and quilting.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Loy Harrol Hamby, an infant son, Robert Edward Hamby, and a sister, Vera Lee Klein.
Jean is survived by her four children, David (JoBeth) Hamby of Odessa, Daniel (Victoria) Hamby of Ropesville, Ramona Hamby of Lubbock, and Everrett Hamby of Little Elm; four grandchildren, Joshua Hamby, Christina (Laramie) White, Justin (Lizzie) Hamby, and Johnathon (Sarah) McLoud; nine great-grandchildren; a brother, Charles (Ethel) Russell; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Memorials are suggested to the American Alzheimer’s Assoc., American Cancer Society or the Ropesville Cemetery Association.
We would like to thank all the staff of Heritage Oaks Nursing and Rehabilitation Center for their loving care of Jean and to Nelda Kochis, her roommate and dear friend.”
