Larry Lamar Durrett, age 69, passed away peacefully in his home Sunday, April 15, 2018. Larry was born October 1, 1948, to Paul and Opal Sheek Durrett in Levelland, Texas. He was raised in the dry, windy plains of West Texas amidst farmlands, tumbleweeds and the blazing hot sun. From this rural seed grew one of the most generous, gentle and kind men of a generation.
Larry was driven by a deep commitment to provide stability and strength for his family and loved ones. He found his career as a pharmacist in his late twenties, graduating from pharmacy school at The University of Texas in Austin. He worked both in retail and hospital settings, developing lifelong friendships along the way. Larry enjoyed a committed, enduring career in pharmacy until his retirement from the United Supermarket Pharmacy family in January 2018.
His children and grandchildren brought Larry incredible joy. As a younger man, he was an engaged and devoted father raising his two children, Ryan and Amanda. His devotion continued as his children grew and created families of their own; his grandchildren enjoying the same generous love, gentleness and devotion with which Larry raised his children.
He was a man who never tried to steal attention; a man who quietly impacted lives, generously gave to anyone who asked, and more than anything was present – present to listen, to laugh and to make life feel less complicated. Larry may not have wanted anyone to make a big fuss about him, but the outpouring of love from every era and area of his life show the legacy of a man who unconditionally valued and loved people.
Survivors include his children, Ryan Lamar Durrett and wife, Laura; and Amanda Michelle (Durrett) Boyd and husband, Jacob; grandchildren, Keegan and Ellery Durrett; and Lola June Boyd; sister, Wanda Young and husband, Les.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Paul Lamar and Opal Mozelle Durrett; sisters Barbara Joyce Mills and Betty Jean Durrett.
Friends, family and all who loved him are welcome to gather for fellowship and remembrance on Wednesday, April 18, 2018, from 6:00 to 8:00 PM, at Lake Ridge Chapel and Memorial Designers.
