Ann “Mammie” Underwood, 74, passed peacefully with her family surrounding her on Thursday, June 8th after a 76-day valiant battle with pancreatic cancer.
Ann was born to Gene Austin Fullingim and Charlene Jackson Fullingim on June 23, 1948, in Lubbock, Texas. She was raised on the family farm in Petersburg, Texas. She was a high school twirler and loved making the drag up and down Main Street. Ann enjoyed spending lots of time at the Petersburg swimming pool as a teenager, coincidentally, where Alan Underwood was a lifeguard. Ann graduated from Petersburg High School in 1966 and went on to Texas Tech where she majored in Human Development. She graduated from Tech in 1970. Shortly after graduation, she married Alan Underwood on October 3, 1970, which fulfilled her first-grade declaration that she was going to marry him someday.
Ann and Alan lived in various places during their young married life as Alan played semi-pro and pro football and later worked in the cotton business. In 1980, they returned to Lubbock to begin Underwood Cotton Company. Ann helped Alan in the business but spent the majority of her time and energy mothering their three boys. Ann was active in each PTA and Booster Club her boys were associated with, and she delighted in every sport and activity her boys participated in. She never wanted to miss out on a fishing or hunting trip. Wherever her boys were, you would find her there, too.
Ann was most well-known by the name, Mammie. She kept an exhaustive schedule, never wanting to miss a single activity her nine grandchildren were involved in. She was ever-present in their lives and in the lives of their friends. Ann was “Mammie” to many a child that was not her own. She was well known for her bright eyes, beautiful smile, and her camera. Ann lived her life behind the lens of her camera capturing many events and special activities for those she loved. She was often referred to as the “paparazzi” by her children.
Ann spread joy and fun wherever she went. She loved to travel with her family and built lasting memories with them. She was the ringleader of mischievous fun and was known for being game for just about anything. She loved a good prank and had a wonderful sense of humor. Ann focused on building family traditions which included Wednesday night home-cooked family dinners, Friday night sleepovers with all her grandchildren, and family trips to the mountains and beach.
Ann’s presence will be missed by so many. She lived her day-to-day life with the happiest of hearts. She left this world making sure that everyone she loved knew how precious they were to her.
Ann was preceded in death by her parents Gene Austin Fullingim and Charlene Jackson Fullingim. Ann is survived by her husband, Alan Underwood; three sons Cade Underwood (Shana), Josh Underwood (Jennifer), and Miles Underwood (Jaci); nine grandchildren Cale Underwood, Lilli Underwood, Maggi Underwood, Ellie Underwood, Avery Underwood, Sophi Underwood, Olivia Underwood, Owen Underwood, and Riggs Underwood; siblings Jenny Meadows, Sid Fullingim and Eddie Fullingim; and a host of loving friends and family members.
Mammie’s Celebration of Life will be held at the Underwood Ranch located east of Southland, Texas at 11:00 am on June 23, 2023.
