Johnny Lee Whetstone was called home to be with the Lord on Sunday, March 3, 2024. Johnny was born on January 30, 1953, in St. Matthews SC., to Calvin and Ethel Whetstone.
Johnny graduated from Harrem High School in New York City in 1972. Johnny joined the U.S. Air Force in 1973 and served proudly through March 1993. During his military career, Johnny traveled to Moody AFB in Valdosta GA., Luke AFB in Glendale AZ., Camp New Amsterdam in The Netherlands, Ramstein AFB in Germany, and Seymour Johnson AFB in Goldsboro NC.
In May 1976, Johnny asked Elizabeth Williams for her hand in marriage. She gladly accepted, and she became his wife on October 20, 1976. It was meant to be, because the two met in the 6th grade and for 10 years they enjoyed each other’s company and decided to embark on this journey together. That journey lasted for 47 years. The two adopted Michael Alexander Whetstone in September 1988 while stationed in Germany. Michael and his father shared a special father/son relationship.
Johnny retired from the Air Force and the family moved from NC. To Lubbock TX. in May 1993. Johnny worked at Reese AFB for Lockheed Martin as a scheduler until the base closed in 1997. Johnny decided to continue working toward his degree in accounting and attended Wayland Baptist University for a period. Being the type of man that wanted to work, he started a career with the U.S. Postal Service, which lasted 21 years. Johnny decided to retire in January 2020.
Johnny liked to fish, watch westerns on TV, go out to eat, and occasionally he would meet his friends for lunch. He looked forward to traveling to visit his family in SC. and NY.
Johnny is survived by his wife Elizabeth; son, Michael; brothers, Marvin Whetstone, Ronnie Whetstone, Bernard Boykin, Benjamin Whetstone, and Kenneth Whetstone; and several nieces, nephews, and sisters-in-law whom he loved dearly.
Johnny is preceded in death by his parents; brother, Calvin Whetstone; and sisters, Ethel Knight, and Saudia Whetstone.
Johnny will be greatly missed but never forgotten.
