John Archer Cowan passed away Saturday, July 28, 2018. We will gather for fellowship and remembrance from 6-8 p.m. Tuesday, July 31, 2018 at Lake Ridge Chapel and Memorial Designers. Family and friends will celebrate his life of 79 years on Wednesday, August 1, 2018, at 1:30 p.m. at the First Baptist Church in Ropesville.
John was born in Ropesville, Texas on Christmas Day 1938 to Charles Franklin and Bessie Honor Cowan. He graduated from Stephenville High School and served in the National Guard from 1957-1963. For the majority of his life, he was involved in farming in Hockley County, where his grandfather, Lee Cowan, produced the first bale of cotton in the county. He enjoyed reading the Bible, hunting, fishing, and watching Texas Tech University football.
He is survived by his children’s mother (Shirley Cowan Davis), children (John Cowan Jr., Chris Cowan and wife Trish, Dawna Walls and husband John, Clay Cowan and wife Tanya, and Josh Cowan and wife Anneliese), grandchildren (Elizabeth Bass and husband Aaron, Coy Cowan and wife Allison, Tyler Cowan, Anna Cowan, Ty Cowan and wife Mattie, Garrett Cowan, Luke Walls, and Leah Walls), great-grandson (Dean Bass), and four siblings (Viola Williams, Frank Cowan, Opal Russell, and Charlene Pruitt). He is preceded in death by his parents and five siblings (James Cowan, Charles Cowan Jr., Rebecca Blair, Cecil Cowan, and Sue Cowan).
