Services for James Swafford, age 86, of Lubbock will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, July 25, 2018, at Lake Ridge Chapel and Memorial Designers with Barry Ezra officiating. Interment will follow in Peaceful Gardens Memorial Park under the direction of Lake Ridge Chapel and Memorial Designers. James passed from this life at home in Lubbock after a lengthy illness on July 21, 2018. He was preceded in death by his parents, Loys and Gladys Swafford of Rome, Georgia, and Brycen Hill of Lubbock.
He was born January 4, 1932, in Heflin, Alabama, where the family farmed until 1950. At that time he moved with his family to Rome, Georgia. He enlisted in the US Air Force in 1951 and was stationed at Reese AFB in Lubbock until 1953 and served a year in Korea. After returning from the war, he married Sylvia Wright on May 8, 1954, in Lubbock. They lived in Austin until James was honorably discharged in 1955, then making their home in Lubbock. He worked at Sears Roebuck retiring after 32 years. He was Customer Service Operations Engineer. James’s special joy was his grandchildren and their special interests. He loved home, fast cars and riding motorcycles.
James was a member of the 78th & University Avenue Church of Christ.
He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Sylvia; son, Tony; daughter Sharla Hill; and granddaughter, Shrae Hill, all of Lubbock; brothers, Charles Swafford and wife, Marie of Lindale, Georgia, Lee Roy Swafford and wife, Robin of Rome, Georgia; sisters, Barbara Howren and husband, Slugger of Rome, Georgia, Betty Dillingham and husband, Jackie of Silver Creek, Georgia, Phyllis Ledford and husband, Dennis of Silver Creek, Georgia; a brother-in-law, Ronald Wright and wife, Pat of Lubbock; and a number of nieces and nephews.
