Samuel Homer Crockett, Jr. passed away May 25, 2016, in Lubbock, Texas. He was born October 19, 1922, to Grace Idell (Mitchell) Crockett and Samuel Homer Crockett, Sr. in Cloud Chief, Oklahoma. Sam’s hometowns were small places in New Mexico, Oklahoma, and the Texas Panhandle with his father serving as a Methodist preacher (Architecture degree from Vanderbilt) who was also a church architect/builder, and after retirement did carpentry and sign painting. Sam graduated from Grady High School in New Mexico, attended college in Illinois and Texas (University of Texas & Texas Tech University), and received his Master of Arts degree from Columbia (NY, NY). He then enlisted into the Army Air Corps and trained in Biloxi, Mississippi. After the death of his wife, Rosalis (Legett), he and his daughter, Careyn, moved to Lubbock where his parents lived. He later met and married Janice (Snodgrass) Walker on April 11, 1963, in the chapel of First Methodist Church. Sam worked for LISD helping special education students for many years. For the last few years, he and Janice enjoyed Raider Ranch as their home until her death last October. Sam enjoyed traveling, visiting museums, reading, fishing, home gardening, and studying astronomy. In his earlier years, he enjoyed playing tennis, biking, and healthy nutrition, many years before it was a ”thing”. He was a faithful member of First United Methodist Church and Hi Robinson Sunday School Class. Sam was preceded in death by his parents, Janice (his wife of 53 years), a brother, Paul Gaylord Crockett, and a sister, Melba Adrienne Gansler. He is survived by his daughters, Careyn Henslee of Amarillo and Tami (Bill) Bopp of Metairie, LA; grandchildren: Amanda Henslee (Adam Howell), Jennifer Peck (Steven), Ryan Owen (Emily), Regan Owen (Hillary), and Lauren Ashley Owen; great-grandchildren: Noah Finnis Howell, Maudie, Hank, and Mallie Owen; a brother, Garland Lee Crockett, and sister, Mona Ruth Heise, Brother-in-law Jerrell Snodgrass (Donna).
