The family of Fred Baker will celebrate his life of 82 years at 10:00 AM, Monday, December 21, 2020, at First United Methodist Church, with visitation following in the church parlor. Fred will be available for viewing from 11 am – 6 pm Saturday and Sunday. He passed on Tuesday, December 15, 2020. In support of the health of everyone, face coverings are mandatory while attending the service. The service will be live-streamed here on this page, where you are encouraged to sign the virtual guestbook and share memories and expressions of sympathy. On September 12, 1938, Fred was born to Bruce and Doris Baker in Havre, MT. In 1956, Fred earned his high school diploma in Orland, CA. His undergraduate degree came from Fresno State in Fresno, CA. Pursuing his passion for ministry and desire to care for others, Fred attended Iliff Seminary in Denver, Colorado where he completed his studies and became an ordained minister in the United Methodist Church. His career as a minister included faithful and caring service in his many appointments within the California-Nevada Conference of the United Methodist Church. He retired from the ministry in 1997 and, ultimately, made his home in Lubbock.Although retired, Fred did not lose his passion for service to others, and he continued to engage with people at some of the most significant times in their lives. Most notably, during his retirement, Fred became known as the “Wedding Pastor,” officiating many weddings across the South Plains. Always sensitive to the needs of those he served, Fred’s ceremonies were never “cookie-cutter.” He always took the time and care to write an original and creative ceremony tailored to each couple and celebrating their individual circumstances.Fred’s life was a testament to devotion – to family, church, and his many friends. His life’s journey was deeply enriched by his love for music and travel. Many fond hours were spent at either Vesper Concerts or concerts at the TTU Music Department. He also treasured the times he was able to “hit the open road” in his motorhome, typically eschewing the main thoroughfares.Survivors include his wife, Sue Baker; children, Katy Baker, Charlie (Carl) Pankowski, Bob (Shelly) Baker, and Deborah Clark; eight grandchildren; seventeen great-grandchildren, and siblings, Chuck Baker, Bob (Donna) Baker; and Lillian (Art) Thurston. He was preceded in death by his parents; and by his wife of thirty-seven years, Carolyn Baker.
