Derek Rodgers lived a life filled with laughter, love, and an undeniable presence that could brighten any room. He was a man with a magnetic personality, always exuberant, loving, funny, hardworking, and giving-the true life of the party wherever he went. His heart was as big as Texas, and his kindness was felt by everyone who had the privilege of knowing him.
Born on April 27, 1984, in Lubbock, Texas, Derek was the son of Bud Rodgers and Teresa Powell. He graduated from Roosevelt High School and later attended Texas Tech University, where he continued to grow into the dedicated and hardworking man his family and friends adored.
Derek was a skilled technician with DH Pace Company, where his work ethic and easygoing nature made him a valued team member. But beyond his career, Derek’s true joy came from the people and passions that filled his life. He loved playing golf, cooking, and spending time with his family and friends. He had an incredible soft spot for animals, always showing compassion and care for them in a way that revealed his genuine and giving heart.
In January 2017, fate brought Derek and Sade Velazquez together through social media, and from the very beginning, they knew they had found something special. Their instant connection blossomed into love, and they were eagerly planning their future together, ready to take on the world side by side.
Derek’s love for his family was unwavering, and he leaves behind a cherished legacy in those who survive him, including his father, Bud Rodgers, and his bonus mom, Kim; his mother, Teresa Lynette Powell; and his sisters, Amy DeAnda and her husband, David, and Kenann Rodgers. He was also a proud uncle to Dayton DeAnda and his wife, Hayley; Dillon DeAnda; and Brooklyn DeAnda, a loving great-uncle to Brystol DeAnda, aunt, Jan Rodgers, and was blessed to have JR and Donna Jarrett as his bonus grandparents. Alongside his beloved fiancée, Sade, Derek was surrounded by many, many friends who became like family to him.
Though Derek’s time on this earth feels far too short, the impact he made will last a lifetime. His unforgettable laughter, infectious energy, and generous heart will continue to live on in the countless memories shared by those who loved him.
Derek was a proud Red Raider, and in his honor, his family asks that everyone attending his Celebration of Life wear the colors of the Texas Tech Red Raiders. He would be proud to see his loved ones dressed in red and black, a tribute to the school and community that meant so much to him.
