Darla Kay McAndrew, 72, a resident of Lubbock, Texas, passed away on April 27th, 2024. She was born on June 20th, 1951, to Bob and Wanda Kay in Plainview, Texas, and grew up in Dimmitt, TX. Darla found joy in drama clubs during her school years in Dimmitt, graduating from Dimmitt ISD in 1969 before pursuing higher education at Texas Tech University.

Following her studies, Darla ventured to California for a period before making Lubbock her home. She worked many years at UMC and dedicated her time and skills to Tyler Technologies for 21 years before retiring.

Beyond her professional endeavors, Darla was a beloved member of the poodle community, finding solace and camaraderie in the company of fellow enthusiasts. Her generous spirit extended to volunteering with the Salvation Army during the holiday season and supporting various charities, including the local food bank, demonstrating her commitment to community well-being. One of her favorite activities was spending cherished time with her granddaughter, Kaylee, particularly enjoying their shared passion for watching the Lady Raiders play basketball.
Darla found joy in the ocean’s beauty and the opportunity to travel, often meeting up with her poodle community across the United States.

Darla is preceded in death by her parents, Wanda and Bob Kay, her brother, Rocky Kay and brother-in-law, Max Ellison. She is survived by her daughter, Errin Todd, and husband, Steve, along with their children, Kaylee and Josh. Her sister, Delese Ellison, and her nieces and nephews: Josh Kay, Shay Kay, Kiera Kay, Dusty Kay, Krysta and Derion Johnson, Adrian Ellison, Sarah and Brad Wethington, Waylon Wethington, Zane Wethington. Along with many cousins and close friends, and her beloved poodle, Ivy.

A celebration of Darla’s life will be held at Lake Ridge Chapel in Lubbock on Sunday May 5th, welcoming friends and family to pay their respects. Additionally, an online gathering is available for those unable to attend in person.

Darla will be remembered fondly. She helped my husband and I through a very difficult time when my husband was injured. She was also lovely to talk with and would visit with my daughter and I during our lunch break at Tyler. We are so grateful for her and will miss her. She made a difference.

I am so sorry for your loss. I have many memories working with Darla. She was also so kind and encouraging to everyone that she met. No one was a stranger to Darla so knew everyone if she didn't know you she would get to know you. She will be so missed.

Everything said about Darla today is true. She was the mom, big sister at Tyler. I remember her never getting excited about any “crisis”. She was always calm and her demeanor calmed us as well. She was one of a kind. She’ll be missed.

This sweet lady always had a kind word for everyone! She knew how to be a soft place for anyone who needed one! She will be so missed!!

Dear family, Darla loved you beyond words. PYou and her beloved poodles were the light of her life. I will miss my best friend of my youth but I am so grateful she is no longer suffering. I knew from the moment we met that we would be close friends. Darla and Ollie came to spend some time with my husband, Dave & poodle, Holly. We went up the mountains in Montana & Wyoming early October. I promised her when she returned we would do the whole route, but the snow was beginning to coat the Beartooth Highway. She wanted to bring her beloved daughter and granddaughter to visit. That offer still stands. Your mother was a brilliant light in so many people’s lives.

God bless each one of you during the loss of your Mom. You all are in my prayers and heart.

I knew Darla from our Nextdoor Lubbock Lunch Ladies group. She was a very sweet lady and we enjoyed her company. My thoughts and prayers are with her family and loved ones during this time. May your faith guide all thru the coming days.

Darla was one of the first to welcome me at Tyler Technologies. I wasn't in the office often but it was always a warm treat to see her. Anytime I needed anything that even kind of fell into her "realm" of expertise she helped me. She was truly a gem and I'm so grateful to have known her. Prayers for her family.
