A service to celebrate her 93 years of life is scheduled at 10:00 AM on Friday, May 31, 2024, at Lake Ridge Chapel and Memorial Designers, followed by a graveside service at Resthaven Memorial Park Cemetery. Heaven called Betty home on Tuesday, May 28, 2024.
Betty was born on November 12, 1930, to Elmer and Nomia “Elizabeth” Hicks Johnson in Taylor, TX.
At the age of 13, Betty began her career in the hosiery department at Neiman Marcus in downtown Dallas, which led to her modeling in-store for Neiman Marcus and eventually propelled her into winning numerous beauty pageants, including Miss Tarrant County, Miss Dallas, Miss Zither, Miss Wichita Falls, and the runner-up position in Miss Texas, among others. Apart from scholarships, she won a TV in 1949 and a screen test in Hollywood, which she declined.
Betty met her soulmate, James “Jim” Milton Evans, at Woodrow Wilson High School at the age of 15. Jim and Betty pursued their education at North Texas State and after five years of courtship, they married on April 6, 1951, at St. John’s Methodist Church in Dallas, Texas. In 1958, they relocated to Lubbock, Texas. Jim and Betty shared a remarkable journey of over 72 years filled with laughter, love, and dancing. As Jim often said, they “fell in love and never fell out.”
They were renowned for their love of dancing to live music around town. Supporting local artists such as Junior Vasquez and Bo Gárza, as well as their favorite local winery, Llano Estacado, where she regularly represented them at wine festivals across the state. Betty never met a stranger. She could walk into any social situation and leave having charmed everyone in the room.
Betty’s professional journey included working for Texas Employers Insurance and volunteering as a Cub Scout den mother and president of Planned Parenthood. However, she spent the majority of her career as a Medical Office Administrator for nearly 50 years in the employ of family friend, Dr. James G. Morris.
Above all, Betty cherished her roles as a wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. She often referred to her family as her greatest achievement. As the matriarch, her love, wisdom, and support were deeply cherished by all.
Betty is survived by her children, James “Bo” M. Evans Jr., Candy Lindeman-Hoyle (John), and Kim Mauldin (Steve); grandchildren, James “Jim” M. Evans III (Kai), Jason Lindeman (Heather), Matt Mauldin (Aggi), and Kristin Mauldin; great-grandchildren Christian Ward (Taylor), Sage Evans, Jade Evans, Jaci Evans, Arya Lindeman, Sebastian Lindeman, Theodore Mauldin, Sloane Mauldin, and Connor Mauldin; as well as great-great-grandchildren, Macie and Breslyn Ward.
She is preceded in death by her husband, James “Jim” Evans, and her parents, Elmer Johnson and Nomia “Liz” Johnson Roper.
