Berta Rosa Hernandez passed away peacefully on May 5th surrounded by family while in the hearts of all who loved her. Her battle with ALS was unpredictable; yet, her strength and spirit was complemented by all the family members who went above and beyond to support her journey through illness.
Berta was born on January 6, 1948, to Tomas and Rosa Garza in San Antonio, TX. She was the second oldest of 12 siblings and was the amicable, loving older sister who found leisure and soul in listening to Rock and Roll and the works of The Beatles and The Monkeys. Her first job working at The Jiffy Car Wash in Lubbock, TX in the summer of ‘66 introduced her to Pedro (Pete). She married the love of her life, Pedro Hernandez on December 11th, 1967, at The Christ of King Church in Lubbock, TX.
In 1970, the two soulmates moved to Saint Paul, MN with many of the Garza family members. Berta and Pete’s family grew as they welcomed four beloved children: David, Richard, Carol, and Cindy. They resided in Saint Paul, MN for 45 years as they welcomed Grandchildren and Great Grandchildren. In 2015, Berta and Pete returned to Lubbock where their love story began to enjoy the warmth and company of their family in Texas.
In 2022, Berta was diagnosed with ALS, a rare disease that progressively limited her functional capacity. With the support of family and friends, she was able to spend quality time with her loved ones through her final days.
Berta is survived by her husband, Pedro Hernandez; children, David and Richard Hernandez, Carol Kath, and Cindy Hernandez; 13 grandchildren, and 22 great-grandchildren. Berta is also survived by her siblings Anna (Jesse) Hernandez, Linda (Late Ted) Figueroa, Jose Luis Garza, Jesse (Laurelie) Garza, Daniel Garza, Gloria Garza, JoAnn Garza-Ochs, Yolanda (Jeff) Garza Amundson along with many Nieces and Nephews.
She is preceded in death by her parents, Tomas, and Rosa Garza; siblings, Roy Garza, and Elizabeth LaBelle; and Grandchild Casanova Carter.
All family and friends are welcome to join the reciting of the Holy Rosary on Thursday, May 11th at 6:00 pm. A memorial service to celebrate her 75 years of life will be held on Friday, May 12th at 2:00 PM.
