Arthur Duward Hughes Jr. passed away on January 25, 2024, at the age of 78. He was born to Arthur D. Sr. and Lotte Belle Hughes on May 31, 1945. He was known to many as “Ozzie” or A.D.
He graduated from Texas Tech University in 1967 with a Bachelor’s Degree in Animal Science. While attending Tech he assisted the Masked Rider with the Mascot “Charcoal Cody” at the football games.
A.D. and Susan met in 1964 and married in 1966. Faith in God and an enduring love afforded them 57 years together.
He managed SPF swine operations and sold pork to factories such as Jimmy Dean’s in Plainview, Texas in 1970. He started farming in 1974 and continued for 35 years. He also raised hogs for his children and others in the community to show at stocks shows statewide.
He joined the American Ag movement in 1978 in solidarity with farmers nationwide bringing awareness to the inequity of farm policies.
He loved Jesus and loved sharing the Gospel.
He will always be remembered as a funny guy who could tell a good story with some embellishment. He had an unwavering love for his wife, his children, grandchildren and great grandchildren.
He is survived by his wife, Susan; daughter, Suzette Patterson and husband Rodney, son Bud Hughes and wife Chrystal; Grandchildren: Cameron, Savannah, Kennedy, Noah, Zach, Grant, Eli, Davis, Isaac and Caleb; Great grandchildren: Rori, Wallen and future baby girl, Dakota.
