Tom was a lifelong fisherman – on the water with his flyrod, and in spirit, always seeking deeper truths and meaningful connection. His gift for compassion and mentorship touched countless lives, offering wisdom, joy, and heartfelt presence.
A scholar by profession, Tom was a two-time recipient of prestigious grants for study in Germany: the German Academic Exchange in Bonn (1963) and the Fulbright Award (1990). More enduring than his accolades was his dedication to opening doors for students. Through his leadership in German, Austrian, and Swiss Studies Abroad programs at Furman University and Texas Tech, Tom made exploration and discovery possible for generations.
A deeply respected educator and professor, he earned multiple honors including the Amoco Foundation Award and the TTU College of Art & Sciences President’s in Teaching Award- yet his greatest legacy lives on in the minds and hearts of those he taught.
For those privileged to know him personally, Tom was a tender – hearted husband, a proud father and grandfather, and a loyal friend whose integrity, humor spontaneity, and faith illuminated every relationship. He leaves behind a legacy of love and learning, and a presence that will be profoundly missed.
