Sydney Jo Haslam Brooks of Lubbock, Texas passed away in the early hours of April 26, 2025. Sydney was born in Tulsa, Oklahoma on October 29, 1939, the daughter of James Yarnell and Kathryn Lorene Haslam, who preceded her in death. She is survived by one brother, John Haslam, of Houston, Texas. She grew up in the Christian Church and is a long time member of the Presbyterian Church.
On September 2, 1961 at Rogers Height’s Christian Church she married her husband, Dee Brooks. They have three daughters; Kathryn Freitas of Dallas, Texas, Melissa Brooks, and Amy Davey, both of Lubbock, Texas. Her survivors include her husband, Dee; Kathryn Freitas and husband Louis; Melissa Brooks; Amy Davey and husband Ted; John Haslam and wife Kay; 14 grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren (plus two more on the way) whom she loved dearly and was so proud of. Other survivors include Dee’s sister, Jane Keeley and three nephews and two nieces.
Sydney graduated from Will Rogers High School in Tulsa in 1957. She attended and graduated from Hillcrest Hospital School of Nursing in 1962 with her diploma in nursing and from University of Texas at El Paso with a bachelor’s degree in Business Administration in 1985. She began her nursing career right after graduating in 1962 and continued to when she retired at age 70 in 2009 with breaks for family, to attend UTEP, and to work in accounting. Foremost in her nursing career was assuring and providing compassion and excellence in patient care, particularly for the elderly.
Her passions outside her professions were her family, gardening, and sewing, in particular quilting. She also worked as a volunteer to make Christmas stockings that are provided to U.S. Air Force members by a local group each year. Sydney lived Christ’s commandment to love God and love others throughout her life.
A memorial service for Sydney will be held at Wolfforth Methodist Church on Friday, May 2nd at 11:00am officiated by Rev. Bailey Barkley. Memorials may be made in Sydney’s name to Wolfforth Methodist Church or Hospice of the South Plains.
