We invite you to view the recorded service on this page, sign her virtual guestbook, and download her memorial keepsake folder to your device for printing. On January 21, 1931, Martha was born to John and Hester Thomas in Amarillo, TX. She was the middle child and the only girl of three. With being the only girl, she was not only tough but was also a daddy’s girl. She was always involved with school activities, and one of her proudest times was becoming a cheerleader in high school. After graduating from high school, she went to Texas Tech. She was to room with one of her best friends. Ironically when mom showed up to Tech her friend decided not to show up and mom was there by herself. Sadly, she ended up being a Red Raider for only a semester. What was funny to her son Trent, is that she talked about the cotton fields across from her on University Ave! With her friend not there, she asked her father if she could come home and go to West Texas State. She had promised him she would finish her degree. In 1953 she Graduated from West Texas State University with a degree in Education. Her kids would later tease their mom for “technically” being an Aggie. In 1990 West Texas joined with Texas A&M, but she was always adamant that her diploma said only West Texas State College. Martha would eventually reach a 30 plus year career as a Home Economics high school teacher. She touched countless young people during her tenure at Hereford High School. Teaching her love of cooking and sewing. Finally, she was a senior sponsor for all three of her children from 1973, 1982, and 1986. She “retired” in 1990 and picked up another career of sewing for her family and friends. Her specialty and most love was quilting. That was her legacy as a mom, grandmother, and great-grandmother. They are truly works of art. She lived her life without fear and was the kindest and sweetest lady to a lot of people. Her love for her children and family will be missed.
