It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of Magartha “Irene” Blackwell, born December 21, 1936, in Paris, Texas to Loyd and Mary Alice Ruthardt. Irene was known for her warm spirit, unwavering faith, and her love for family, friends and her devoted church community at Southcrest Baptist Church. She was a shining example of grace and strength, and her legacy will continue to inspire those lucky enough to have known her.
Irene’s life was rich with accomplishments and meaningful relationships. On March 10. 1956, Irene married the love of her life, Kenneth Vernon Blackwell. She was a dedicated professional, retiring in 1992 after 28 years of service with Southwestern Bell Telephone Company. But her hard work did not stop there. Irene and her late husband, Kenneth, built a successful investment and rental property business. She was a force to be reckoned with, yet always carried herself with humility and kindness. Irene cherished her travels with her husband and family, especially her trips to the Bahamas and Ruidoso, NM. Beyond her adventures, spending quality time with her family was paramount, sharing stories and creating memories that enriched her love for loved ones. In her leisure time, Irene found joy in yoga and playing cards with friends. Later in life, Irene’s caring heart always found time to take her friends to doctor appointments. She was a radiant presence, full of life, love and laughter.
Along with her parents, Irene is preceded in death by her husband of 50 years, Kenneth Vernon Blackwell; sibling, Bobby Ruthardt, Jetta Louise Smith, and James Ruthardt. Irene leaves behind her son, Kenneth (Vickie) Blackwell; her daughter, Terri Presley; her grandchildren, Amber (Tim) Distel, Brian Blackwell, and Brandon Presley; her great-grandchildren, Bryson and Harper Distel; her brother, Ernest (Carol) Ruthardt; sister-in-law, Marolyn Ruthardt; and brother-in-law, Gene Smith.
As we remember Irene, let us hold onto the words from the Book of Proverbs 31:25-26, “She is clothed with strength and dignity, and she laughs without fear of the future. When she speaks, her words are wise, and she gives instructions with kindness.” Irene lived these words every day, and they serve as an inspiration to us all.
Private graveside services will be held on Saturday, November 16, 2024, at 2 pm Resthaven Memorial Park and Cemetery in Lubbock, Texas.
