The family of John David VanStory will host a gathering of family and friends from 6:00 PM until 8:00 PM on Wednesday, November 30, 2022, at Lake Ridge Chapel and Memorial Designers. A service to celebrate his life of 86 years is scheduled at 1:00 PM on Thursday, December 1, 2022, at Lake Ridge Chapel, followed by a graveside service at Brownfield Cemetery. John David VanStory was born September 22, 1936, to William and Minnie VanStory in Grenada, MS. John grew up in Grenada, MS. In April of 1955, he joined the army in Jackson, MS, and was in the reserves until 1962. During this time, John traveled to 19 countries in Europe and was awarded the Good Conduct Medal. John loved music and, along with his brother, Jr., established and performed in a band called The Playboys. During one of their “jamming sessions,” John was able to “pick” with Johnny Cash, Elvis, and his uncle Marcus VanStory.
After leaving the military, John landed in Brownfield, Texas, where his parents were living, and began working at a parts dealership, which lead to a lifelong career as a parts manager. Over the years, he was employed by Quinn Connelley, Frank Brown, and Shamrock Chevrolet. After 40 years of service, John retired in 2005. Throughout his retirement, he enjoyed playing golf and watching Nascar, Texas Tech, and the Dallas Cowboys.
John is survived by his wife, Janet VanStory; children, John David (Dana) VanStory Jr. and Jay Barret VanStory; stepchildren, Elizabeth Kay (Elijah) Vasquez, Kimberley Kay Johnston, James Darrell (Boran Lee) Johnston Jr.; grandchildren, Denae Kane, Deana VanStory; step-grandchildren, Thomas Vasquez, Nicholas Vasquez; siblings Dewey (Sammie) VanStory, Robert VanStory, Patricia (Benny) Edwards.
He is preceded in death by his parents, William and Minnie VanStory; siblings, Mattie Beatrice Perez, Mary Helen Mansker, Dorthy Lee Crecy, Gene VanStory, Bill VanStory, Dolan Leon VanStory Jr., Tommy Ray VanStory, Kerry Wayne VanStory.
