Harold Thompson, age 80, of Lubbock, Texas, passed away peacefully on April 26, 2023. Harold was born on July 12, 1942, to Ruby and Joe Thompson of Abernathy, Texas. He graduated from Abernathy High School and received a B.A. in Business from the University of North Texas, where he played football and was a member of the Sigma Nu fraternity. While attending North Texas, Harold met the love of his life, Cheryl, and they were married on September 21, 1963. After college, he and Cheryl moved to Abernathy, where they raised their three children.
Harold was a successful businessman, owning John Deere dealerships throughout West Texas for over 40 years. He was known by all who knew him for his character, honesty, and integrity. He always lived by the gentleman’s code that your word or a handshake was stronger than any contract. Harold was dedicated to his community and was deeply engaged in civic affairs, including serving on the City Council, the School Board, and several Agriculture-related Boards.
His favorite pastime was spending time at the farm, but his joy came from being at Possum Kingdom Lake, especially when joined by family and friends. Fittingly, his grandkids called him Captain, as he loved driving his “crew” all over the lake.
He touched countless lives through his generosity, providing opportunities and a helping hand for families and individuals to move forward and put their lives back together. Harold had a philanthropic heart and was a supporter of the SPCA of Texas, Ronald McDonald House, Texas Tech University, Susan G. Komen, and Cal Farley’s Boys Ranch.
Harold loved his family and enjoyed supporting his children and grandchildren, whether cheering them on at sporting events, attending school functions, or supporting their careers and favorite charities. His profound kindness, generosity, and quiet strength will be deeply missed, but his memory will live on in the hearts of those who were lucky enough to know and love him.
Harold was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 59 years, Cheryl Thompson, and his parents, Ruby and Joe Thompson. He is survived by his children, Kelly Thompson; Kristy and Mike Northcutt; Kim and Chuck Thompson; and his grandchildren Hunter, Avery, Carter, Davis, and Wells. He is also survived by his sisters, Pat Chapman and Jane Phillips, and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.
A private family burial was held at McAdams Cemetery at Possum Kingdom Lake on Saturday, April 29, 2023.
The family of Harold Thompson will host a Celebration of Life Memorial Service on Wednesday, May 3, 2023, at 4:30 pm with a reception to follow at the Lubbock Women’s Club, 2020 Broadway St, Lubbock, Texas.
