Gary McKenzie

Gary McKenzie, 65, of West Texas, passed away peacefully on July 14, 2025. A devoted father, proud grandfather, and true cowboy at heart, Gary leaves behind a legacy of hard work, laughter, and love.

Born to Don and Janice McKenzie, Gary was raised with strong values and a deep love of the land. He graduated from Abernathy High School and attended South Plains College before beginning a 40-year career with Hi-Plains Drilling, where he earned a reputation for being tough, reliable, and respected.

After retiring in 2020, Gary embraced a slower pace, often found tending his garden, handing out snacks after school, or relaxing on the patio. He grew rows of okra, squash, and watermelon, and was just as likely to be found shucking corn in the garage as he was out working his land or tending to his cows.

Gary was known for his signature style—starched Wranglers, ostrich boots, a cowboy hat, and a tucked-in polo—and for his eclectic taste in music, blasting everything from Journey to OutKast from his truck radio. He loved bird hunting, shuffleboard, and sharing stories—like the infamous tale of being accidentally shot in the backside by Karen.

A man of quiet faith, Gary was baptized in junior high and remained grounded in his beliefs throughout his life. He was a member of the Texas Groundwater Association and Elks Lodge #1348 and was always proud of his community and the people in it.

Gary is survived by his children, Ashleigh (Kody) and Tanner (Courtney), and five grandchildren who were the joy of his life: Shane, Lexi, Rylynn, Masyn, and Remy. His mother, Janice McKenzie, his brother Jimmy, his wife, Jana McKenzie, and his sister, Vicky McKenzie, all of Lubbock. His loyal mini Aussie, Hanna, rarely left his side.

He is preceded in death by his father Don.

Gary lived fully and loved deeply. He will be dearly missed by all who knew him, and his stories and spirit will live on in the hearts of those he loved.
