On May 29, 2023, Felipe Gonzales Vargas, Jr., Mineman Class A (MN3), Navy, Ret. passed away. He is survived by wife Colette Vargas; children, Benjamin Vargas, Felichia Vargas, Christopher Vargas, Trey Vargas, and Taran Vargas; mother, Aurora S. Vargas; siblings, Joe Ray Sifuentez, Aurora Vargas, Benjamin Vargas, and Tony Vargas; step siblings, Virginia Marquez, Victor Vargas, Anita Hernandez, Eva Sisneros, Danny Vargas, and Alice Vargas.

He is preceded in death by his father Felipe Vargas, Sr. and sister, Mary Vargas.

The family of Felipe Vargas, Jr. is gathering to recite the Holy Rosary at 6:00 PM, Wednesday, June 7, 2023, at Lake Ridge Chapel and Memorial Designers in Lubbock, TX. A mass celebration honoring his life is scheduled at 1:00 PM, Thursday, June 8, 2023, at Holy Cross Catholic Church in Post, TX, followed by a graveside service at Terrace Cemetery.

Felipe Gonzales Vargas, Jr. was born in October 1970 to Felipe Sr. and Aurora. He grew up in Post, TX, and after high school enlisted in the Navy.

During his time in the Navy, he served in the First Gulf War, and received a Sanitarian Service Metal, .45 Caliber Pistol Sharpshooter Award, a Meritorious Commendation, and 3 Letters of Commendation. He was honorably discharged as a Mineman Class A after 4 years of service in 1993.

After a brief time in New Jersey, he moved back to Texas, and held many different positions in law enforcement and in the trades as a master craftsman. His family remembers how he particularly loved woodworking, always the perfectionist. They saw him give 110% to any endeavor that he partook in.

While not always showing it as well as he would have wished, family was the most important thing to him, and he will be remembered by those closest to him for the good things that he did in his short time here.
