It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Dorothy Mitchell, who left us peacefully at the age of 99 on January 20, 2025. Born on August 25, 1925, on a farm near Girard, Texas, Dorothy was a proud Texan who grew up surrounded by family and friends and developed a love for basketball that stayed with her throughout her life.
Dorothy graduated high school in 1942, right as World War II began, showcasing her resilience and strength that would carry her through many years to come. In 1949, she married the love of her life Doyle Mitchell in Aspermont on their way to his grandmother’s funeral. The couple made Lubbock their home in 1956, and Doyle died in 1972. Dorothy established herself in the retail world, beginning as a salesperson at Cobbs Department Store and later as a buyer for Lena Stephens for the next 30 years.
A devoted member of Monterey Church of Christ since 1968, Dorothy was a woman of faith and community. In her free time, she loved gardening, keeping her home immaculate, and whipping up delicious meals for her family, with Sunday lunch being one of her cherished traditions.
Those left to cherish her memories are her son, Dan Mitchell and wife Gina, and her beloved grandchildren Jeffrey Mitchell and Courtney Mitchell.
Dorothy was preceded in death by her husband, Doyle Mitchell in 1972; her parents, James and Louetta Gunn; two brothers; and one sister.
In this time of sorrow, we honor our beloved Dorothy and the beautiful memories she created in her remarkable 99 years.
