Carolyn Jean Johns was born in El Reno, Oklahoma, on September 3, 1942, to James Garland Drannon and Doris Lee Branstool Drannon. She passed away peacefully on September 20, 2025, surrounded by family. Jean was preceded in death by her parents, two brothers, a sister and her beloved husband Larry Johns, who we know is happy to be reunited with his Rosebud.
Jean was the loving mother of two sons, Hubert Lee Johns and wife Ellen, and Timothy Wayne Johns and wife Charlotte. She also leaves behind three sisters, LaVona, Janice, and Linda and many cherished grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins, and numerous friends, all of whom were touched by her wisdom and love for life.
Jean was also a devoted dog lover, often speaking fondly of the companionship her pets brought her over the years. Her love for animals was just one example of the kindness and compassion that she showed to everyone she encountered.
In her younger years, Jean had a deep passion for horses. She was an accomplished barrel racer, known for her skill and determination in the arena. She carried that same cowgirl spirit into all aspects of her life, always striving for excellence and showing a fierce love for what she believed in.
Jean always had love for music and adventure and was generally game for just about anything, especially if it led her to a craps or poker table at the nearest casino.
A gathering and visitation to celebrate Jean’s life will be held at Lakeridge Chapel and Memorial in Lubbock, Texas, on Sunday, October 12, 2025, from 11am-1pm. We ask in lieu of flowers you make a donation to your favorite charity or plant a tree in her honor.
Jean’s memory will live on in the hearts of those who loved her, and she will be greatly missed by all who knew her.
