Cruz was born March 4, 1942, to Vivian and Miguelina Martinez in San Ignacio, Mexico. She married Bernabe (Ben) Escalon, on December 26, 1959, at St. Joseph’s in Lubbock, TX. Cruz was a devoted wife of 63 years to Ben. Together they served as a pillar in the church community and were deeply involved in both the Petersburg and Idalou parishes. She began her career at Petersburg ISD as a Student Aide and was promoted to High School Secretary where she served until her retirement. Cruz was known for her nurturing spirit and her love of life. She considered the students of Petersburg ISD to be her own children.
Her devotion to her family was unparalleled. She always put her family first and would ensure that her children had all the love and support that she had to give. One of her biggest joys in life was spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She loved to take them on vacation trips and always made sure they had plenty to eat.
Cruz was a beautiful soul that loved unconditionally and always showed grace to others. She was a person that was always willing to give an ear to listen and a shoulder to cry on.
