LtCol Wendy S Collins, USAF, NC, Ret left a message on April 11, 2025:
On behalf of the Society of Air Force Nurses, please know we are mourning with you the death of our sister nurse, Major Lavelle Johnson Powers_. It takes a patriot, willing to give of themselves to other human beings in their time of need, to step forth and join the ranks of our U. S. Air Force Nurse Corps. Your beloved one will be mourned and missed by many who served alongside her. We will include her name in our Memorial Program of the Society of Air Force Nurses in commemoration of her life and service to our nation. With Sincerest Regards and Gratitude, Wendy S. Collins, Lt Col, USAF, Nurse Corps (Retired)
Mary Smith (sister), Terry and Cary Fisher left a message on April 18, 2018:
LaVelle had great pride in her country and was proud of her service in the military. She was also proud having work with Dr. DeBakey in Houston during a time of pioneering heart surgery. She had a military take charge attitude and a joyful spirit that resulted in she and brother-in-law "Porkey" teasing each other often. She loved Joe with total devotion. Thank you so much to her sister Charlene and her husband Johnnie for doing so much for her in her last years by taking care of her house, arranging a place for her to live safely with excellent care to the end. What devoted family.
Bettye J King left a message on April 17, 2018:
So sorry for your loss. I had the opportunity to work with her in surgery at Caprock hospital a long time ago. Such a sweet person.
