Wendell Harrison Wilbanks, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and friend, passed away peacefully on January 31, 2025, at the age of 88. He was born on July 24, 1936, in Palestine, Texas, to the late Cleveland and Nina Wilbanks.
Wendell graduated from high school in 1954, quickly established himself as a committed citizen by entering the Army Reserves at the tender age of 17. Wendell pursued higher education at Sam Houston State University, earning a bachelor’s degree in agriculture along with a lifetime teaching certificate, In 1962, he was called into active service during the Cuban Missile Crisis, a testament to his character and unwavering commitment to his country. Following his service, he returned to Sam Houston State University and received his master’s degree.
In 1966, he married the love of his life, Darlene Anastasia, who became his partner on life’s journey. Together, they created a warm and loving home where family was everything. His grandchildren among many others gave him his favorite title of “Grandad.” Wendell enjoyed a fulfilling career with the U.S. Department of Agriculture, retiring after 30 years of dedicated service. A true Renaissance man, he enjoyed reading, golfing, and hunting, delighting in the beauty of nature and the thrill of the outdoors. Wendell’s love for Texas Tech football and basketball shined bright and he loved cheering them on.
Wendell was an active member of Calvary Baptist Church and shared his passion for learning with the community as a substitute teacher at Cooper. He cherished the relationships he formed throughout his life, always ready with a listening ear or a helping hand. His smile was contagious to everyone he came in contact with.
Wendell had the honor of attending the Texas South Plains Honor Flight in October of 2024 where he was able to be recognized for his time served, meet amazing fellow soldiers, and visit extraordinary landmarks.
Wendell is survived by his devoted wife, Darlene Wilbanks; his loving daughter, Wendy Tomlinson; his cherished grandchildren, Jake Fenter and wife Chelsea, Josh Tomlinson and wife Ashley, Justin Fenter, and Taylor Tomlinson and fiancée Carson Smith; as well as great-grandchildren, Braxton, Barret, and Norrin. He will also be missed by his brothers, Orville Wilbanks and wife Cookie Ruth and Dwaine Wilbanks and wife Nancy; sister, Sarah Clements and husband Willis Clements; and brother-in-law, Pat Borum. Each of these relationships was a source of great joy and pride for Wendell.
Wendell was preceded in death by his parents, Cleveland and Nina Wilbanks; sister, Mary Borum; and son-in-law, Mike Tomlinson.
In this time of grief, let us hold fast to the memories of Wendell Wilbanks—a man who touched the lives of many with his kindness, wisdom, and love. He will be deeply missed but forever in our hearts.
