In Memoriam: Wanda Louise Ramsey Mason (1931-2023)
Lubbock, Plainview, and the West Texas region mourn the passing of a beloved businesswoman, Wanda Louise Ramsey Mason. Wanda was born December 26, 1931, and she lived to the age of 91, when she peacefully passed away on August 1, 2023, after a brief illness. Wanda’s life was one marked by dedication, family values, and a passion for fashion that brought joy to countless lives.
Wanda met the love of her life (Jimme Lee Mason) at Texas Tech University. Wanda loved being a Texas Tech Cheerleader while earning her degree from the College of Home Economics, now the College of Human Sciences. After graduating from Texas Tech, her journey in the clothing industry began after she married Jimmie Mason, in 1952. With an unwavering commitment to the business of her mother-in-law (Louise Davis Mason), Wanda took over operations of the store after Louise’s passing in 1959. Under Wanda’s visionary leadership, the store underwent a transformation, and the name was changed to “Kristi’s” in 1969, becoming a renowned hub for girls and women’s clothing.
For over six decades, Kristi’s flourished under Wanda’s guidance, and then with the addition of her daughter, Kristi Mason Killion. They attracted customers from all corners of West Texas, Oklahoma, and New Mexico. Wanda had an eye for cutting-edge styles that resonated with businesswomen and those seeking contemporary casual designs. Her warm customer service and genuine relationships with patrons turned them into extended family members. For four generations, families in the region trusted Kristi’s to dress their loved ones, and Wanda took great pride in being part of their lives. Kristi’s supported numerous high school and elementary programs, Girl Scout troops, and many more as a way of giving back to the community they love.
Wanda’s legacy extends beyond her successful business ventures. She was a loving wife, mother, and friend. Wanda’s marriage to Jimmie Mason was a source of strength and support for both of them, and their love endured for over seven decades. Wanda was a dedicated mother to her daughter Kristi and her two sons, Jimmie Jr. and Greg. The Mason family was a testament to the power of unity and love. And those who knew Wanda will remember her as a woman of grace, style, and kindness. She leaves behind cherished memories and an indelible mark on the hearts of all who knew her.
Wanda Louise Ramsey Mason is survived by Jimmie Lee Mason Jr. and wife Hattie Mason, Kristi Ann Mason Killion and husband Jerry Killion, and Greg Mason and wife Areace Mason. She is also survived by 6 grandchildren, Nicole Killion Tolson, Brett Killion, Taylor Mason, Davis Mason, Sydney Greer, and Lauren Schneider, as well as 8 great-grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held at First United Methodist Church, Lubbock, Texas at 11:00 am on Friday, August 4th, 2023, to celebrate Wanda’s life. Because of the love Wanda had for Texas Tech and for her husband, Jimmie Lee Mason, in lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations in Wanda’s memory to the Jimmie L. Mason CPA Memorial Accounting Scholarship Fund at the Rawls College of Texas Tech University. She died on Tuesday, August 1, 2023.
