The family of W. G. Spruiell will host a gathering of family and friends from 6:30 pm until 8:30 PM on Friday, April 21, 2023, at Abernathy First Church of the Nazarene. A service to celebrate his life of 95 years is scheduled at 10:00 AM, Saturday, April 22, 2023, at Abernathy First Church of the Nazarene, followed by a graveside service at Abernathy Cemetery. W.G. Spruiell was born October 12, 1927, to Robert and Lena Spruiell in Tahoka, TX. He married Billie Jean Strawn on June 1, 1947, in Lamesa TX. He sang bass in quartet, and they did recordings on a wire recorder. W G was a dry land farmer in Lamesa until there was no water available for irrigating. He moved the family to California where they picked peaches. Later, moving to Abernathy, he did lease farming. He married LaVerne Connally on April 4, 2010, in Seagraves, TX. They enjoyed traveling, including several cruises. They joined Brooks and Kookie, LaVerne’s son and his wife, on a fishing trip to Lake Texoma. He enjoyed hearing LaVerne play the piano and would sing hymns along with her.

He was on the Senior Citizen board for several years, was in Lions Club and was a member of the Gideons. He was a member of the Church of the Nazarene, where he served as Sunday superintendent for many years.

W.G. is survived by wife LaVerne Connally Spruiell; children, Kerby (Kathi) Spruiell of Austin TX, Jana Spruiell of Bethany OK; grandchildren, Joshon (Taylor) Miller of Oklahoma City, Jerod Miller of Dallas TX, Courtney Manier, Cassady Spruiell, both of Austin TX; brother, Franklin (Melda) Spruiell of Lufkin TX; 3 great granddaughters, Kate Miller of Dallas, Magnolia Miller of Oklahoma City, Amalie Miller of Dallas TX 4 great-grandsons, Aiden and Conner Manier, both of Austin TX., Hezakiah Miller, of Oklahoma City, Weston Cabera of Dallas TX; 2 stepsons, Gregg (Dianne) Connally of Seagraves, Brooks (Kookie) Connally of Seminole; 8 step grandchildren, 17 step great-grandchildren and 6 step great-great grandchildren.

He is preceded in death by his first wife, Bille Jean Spruiell; parents, Robert, and Lena Spruiell; siblings, Louis Spruiell, Geneva Holmes, Roxie Smith.

WG and Billie Jean were both a joy to know. They were great fans of Abernathy Baseball when our son Justin played. They rarely missed a home game and very often travelled to out of town games. It was always fun to see them at the ballpark. We will surely miss WG and I know his wife Lavern and children will miss him too. Prayers for you all. Larry and Jo Wright

Laverne Kirby Kathi Jerod Josh We are so saddened to hear of WG passing. He is in a better place in Heaven with no pain. I know he is there because of the way he lived and treated others. His example of how to live life is a great heritage for all his family. He was always good to me and accepted me. I learned so much from him about having patience and respect for others.
