Virginia Pat Dorsey entered into her Heavenly home on Tuesday, September 7, 2021, in Gunnison at the age of 97. She had lived at the Willows and the Senior Care Center for just over 5 years.
Pat was born October 29, 1923, in Cleveland, Ohio to Oma and Harry Thorpe. She was raised by her grandparents in Ohio. After high school, she worked at a Five and Dime, and then in 1942 at the start of World War II, she was employed at the Ravenna Army Ammunition Plant in Ohio. That’s where a handsome Warrant Officer visited one day in October, and the next April she and Dixon Bowman (Doc) Dorsey were married. After the war, they moved to Lubbock, Texas where Pat was welcomed into Doc’s large family. There were three girls born into this union: Sherry Henley, Carrol Reese, and Linda Chambliss. Pat was active in the church that they formed in the backyard of the house that she and Doc built. The church has since become a well-established church in Lubbock. She taught Sunday School, she and Doc were youth group sponsors, she was a Campfire Girl leader, and a good friend and neighbor. The family, along with several other families, camped for many summers, often in Gunnison Country. Pat retired from the Soil Conservation Center after 30 years and then volunteered at her local hospital. Pat was a ceramist, a painter, liked to needlepoint and crochet, and loved rocks! She had a wonderful sense of humor, which she never lost. One of her favorite things to say in the Memory Care Unit was “Come back tomorrow and tell me what I did today!” The staff at the Willows and Senior Care Center loved her and she loved them.
Pat was predeceased by her husband and two sons-in-law; Larry Henley and Pete Reese.
She is survived by her three girls, Sherry of Washington, Carrol of Texas, and Linda (& Bill) of Gunnison; 10 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and 3 great-great-grandchildren.
A service at St. Luke’s Methodist Church in Lubbock, TX will be held on May 28, 2022, at 2:00 PM.
Pat loved her rescue dogs, and a donation to your favorite animal rescue would be wonderful!
