Vaughn Weldon Culwell was born on October 26, 1939 to Henry and Inez Goad Culwell in Stamford, Texas. He attended Whitharrel schools and moved to Plains at age 7. Vaughn was a 1958 graduate of Plains High School. He attended South Plains College, Levelland for three semesters. On October 6, 1960, Vaughn married the love of his life, Carolyn Bass at his parents’ home in Plains, Texas. In October 1960, he began a career at the newly opened John Deere dealership, Plains Farm Supply. In 1961, Carolyn began working at the dealership. In 1966, they became part owner and eventually sole owners. They worked together for the next 31 years until selling the business in 1992. They moved to Lubbock in 2005. Vaughn was a past member of the Plains Chamber of Commerce, Plains Lions Club, and Yoakum County Golf Association. He, along with Carolyn, was honored twice with the “Super Booster Award” for their support of the Plains Cowboys and Cowgirls. Vaughn was a former member of First Baptist Church, Plains and currently a member of Southcrest Baptist Church, Lubbock. Survivors include his wife, Carolyn Culwell; their children, Gary Culwell and wife, Joanna, and Julie Beene and husband, Gordon; grandchildren, Michelle (Michael) Truelock , Brett (Jesika) Culwell, Nicole (Jory) Smith, Tiffani (Tandan) Harvey and Taylor Beene; great-grandchildren, Bailey, Landon, Preston, Brooklyn, Carilyn, Kiergan, Braden, Peighton, Braxton, Haydon, Sterling; and brother, Mike (Mary) Culwell. He was preceded in death by his parents.
