Sylvia Morton Hennigar Pickens was the daughter of Ben and Marguerite Morton who are both deceased.
Sylvia was born February 15, 1934, in Allegeheny County, Pennsylvania. At the age of 14, her family moved to Richmond, Indiana where she graduated high school in 1952. She attended Miami University in Oxford Ohio, where she majored in Elementary Education. Sylvia was a member of Zeta Tau Alpha Fraternity. She taught in Greensville, Ohio and Big Spring Texas. She also attended Texas Tech, where she majored in German. Sylvia was the costume mistress for 3 German plays. Sylvia served as Officer of Wives Club and editor of the OWC newsletter many years. She was also Brownie, Girl Scout and Cadet leader for 10 years.
In 1955 she married Jim Hennigar and was an Air Force wife for 19 years. In 1979 she met Royce Pickens, and they got married in 1980.
Sylvia was very involved at the National Ranching Heritage Center. She was a member of Ranch Hosts since 1990 and served as Secretary, Vice President and President, as well as being an active volunteer for 22 years. She was the office manager for Jay C. Adkins DDS for 19 years, retiring in 2004. She was very active in the A&M Mothers Club of Lubbock County
Sylvia is survived by her children, Scott Hennigar and wife Sheila, Cynthia Hennigar Pedersen; grandchildren, Hollye (Frank) Marquette, John Preston Pedersen, Stuart Hennigar, Tara (James) Richards; great-grandchildren, Reagan Richards, Peyton Richards, Elizabeth Marquette; sister, Irene Morton; nieces and nephews, Greg, Garry, and Darrell Bowman, and Darla Andrews.
A service to celebrate her life of 91 years is August 4, 2025, at 10:00 AM, at Southcrest Baptist Church in Lubbock Texas.
In lieu of flowers or food, the family as chosen the National Ranching Heritage Center or Southcrest Baptist Church to donate in her memory.
