Stephen Harding Conrad passed on Saturday, May 11, 2024, at the age of 73 following a battle with cancer. He was born in Manhattan, Kansas on June 14, 1950. In 1972 he joined the United States Air Force, specializing in the navigation of B-52 bombers, and he achieved the rank of Major before retiring in 1992. In his retirement, he continued to work in the service of others, focusing on behavioral health and earning his masters in marriage and family counseling. His life was transformed by the fellowship he found in Alcoholics Anonymous, and he recently celebrated 39 years of sobriety.
His forever partner in life was his wife, Kerry Ann McGrath, who he married in 1972 in Honolulu, Hawaii. Kerry accompanied him on all of life’s journeys and was by his side at his passing.
He is preceded in death by his father, Clifton Conrad and mother, Ruth Siddal, both of Joplin, Missouri. He is survived by his wife, Kerry; brother, Mark Conrad of Houston, Texas; sons – Aaron Andrew Conrad of Seattle, Washington and Christian Kent Conrad and daughter-in-law Joanna Peery Conrad, both of Lubbock, Texas; grandsons – Dakota Whitlock of Lubbock, Texas and Terrance Whitlock of Hardy, Virginia; and first cousin, Dustin Conrad of St. Louis, Missouri. He cherished the connections he forged with his fellow AA members, and he counted as family his first sponsor, Mike Soccio, as well as Tom Bayer and John Hamlett.
A memorial service with military honors will be held at 6:00 PM on Thursday, May 16, 2024, at Lake Ridge Chapel and Memorial Designers, 6025 82nd Street, Lubbock, Texas. The service will also be streamed virtually.
